Surgery and Anesthesia
Gentle, Safe Surgical Care for Your Cat
At Livermore Family Pet Hospital, we know that bringing your cat in for surgery can feel like a big step—and it’s completely natural to worry. Cats are sensitive by nature, and many don't cope well with unfamiliar environments or changes in routine. That’s why we take extra care to ensure each surgical visit is as calm, safe, and stress-free as possible—for both you and your beloved feline companion.
With the help of fear free means, and safety in mind, we offer our kitty friends anti-nausea and calming medications. Anti-nausea medications are provided the night before surgery to reduce the risk of pets vomiting, which is a common side effect of many anesthetics, and make the process more comfortable for them. The use of calming medications helps to alleviate anxiety and stress of staying in the hospital for surgery and recovery.
A Calming, State-of-the-Art Surgical Environment
Our modern surgical suite is equipped to handle a wide range of procedures, from routine spays and neuters to more advanced or emergency surgeries. We also partner with board-certified veterinary surgeons for more complex cases, so your cat has access to the highest level of surgical expertise when needed.
Every detail of our surgical process—from pre-operative care to recovery—is designed to keep your cat comfortable, safe, and supported at every step.
Focused on Safety Every Step of the Way
Before your cat undergoes any surgery, we perform comprehensive pre-anesthetic evaluations, including bloodwork and a physical exam, to check for any hidden health concerns that could affect their procedure or recovery.
During surgery, we provide:
- Intravenous fluids to help maintain stable blood pressure and hydration
- Continuous monitoring of heart rate, breath rate, oxygenation, temperature, and blood pressure, carbon dioxide level
- Advanced monitoring equipment, including ECG and pulse oximetry, capnograph, end tidal CO2,
- Thermal support with both heated water blankets and warm-air systems (Bair Hugger) to prevent hypothermia and eliminate risk of burns
Throughout the procedure, your cat is never alone—a dedicated registered veterinary technician or a highly trained veterinary assistant monitors their vital signs closely, and a veterinarian is always present to respond quickly if needed. Your cat is also closely monitored throughout recovery as well.
Gentle, Monitored Anesthesia for Cats
Anesthesia in cats requires careful attention and individualized planning. At Livermore Family Pet Hospital, we use the latest anesthetic techniques and medications to ensure a smooth and safe experience. Each patient receives tailored anesthetic and emergency protocols, and is continuously supervised from induction to recovery.
Because even routine anesthesia carries some level of risk, we take every precaution to minimize complications and support your cat's comfort and safety before, during, and after surgery.
