Clean Teeth, Happy Life
At Livermore Family Pet Hospital, we know how much your cat means to you—and we’re here to help you protect their health in every way possible. One often-overlooked aspect of feline wellness is dental care. But did you know that according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, by the age of 3, nearly 70% of cats show signs of dental disease? Taking care of your cat’s teeth and gums plays a vital role in helping them live a longer, happier, and more comfortable life.
Understanding Feline Dental Disease
Just like in humans, plaque forms on a cat’s teeth when bacteria, food particles, and saliva mix together. If not regularly removed through brushing or professional cleanings, plaque hardens into tartar and can lead to gingivitis, an early form of gum disease.
If left untreated, this can progress into periodontal disease—a serious and irreversible condition that can cause gum pain, inflammation, tooth loss, and even affect your cat’s overall health. In severe cases, the bacteria from dental infections can enter the bloodstream and damage the heart, liver, and kidneys.
Common signs of dental disease in cats include:
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Yellow or brown tartar buildup along the gum line
- Persistent bad breath
- Drooling or pawing at the mouth
- Difficulty eating or loss of appetite
